Kevin Ferris

Show Band Specialist

Kevin has been a professional trumpet player now for over twenty years. He began playing trumpet under the tutorage of Richard Johnston in his last year of Primary school before moving on to Beath Senior High where he had Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra (FYJO) Director, Richard Michael, as his class teacher who gave him a real interest in Jazz. Over the years at high school he ended up playing in the Fife Youth Wind Band, followed by the Fife Youth Orchestra. After Richard Michael convinced him to join FYJO, he quickly developed a more keen interest in Jazz (big band lead trumpet playing in particular), which led to him working for the past twenty years with this Scottish big band leader where he gained a wealth of experience. Having played in various other youth Jazz ensembles, brass bands, etc. until leaving school, the trumpet took him overseas for many years. Working in the Mediterranean was followed by three years on Lead Trumpet in Monte Carlo’s Cafe De Paris Casino and Sporting Club, working with many famous artists such as Donna Summer, Barry White, Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach. Leaving Monaco, his desire to travel took him to the U.S.A to work for Royal Caribbean International where he ended up as a musical director for almost eight years, backing, scheduling and conducting hundreds of artists and shows from all over the world, as well as enjoying many fantastic locations and meeting some wonderful musicians. After finally returning to the UK, Kevin has now been working as a freelance UK-based musician for the last five years where he has toured regularly the UK and Europe as part of the”The Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas” trumpet section, played with Edinburgh International Jazz Festival Orchestra led by sax legend Joe Temperley, and also has been a regular player with the Tommy Samson Big Band over the past twenty-plus years. He has also played with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Fife Jazz Orchestra, and can regularly be seen in the pit or on stage in West End show tours such as Joseph, Chicago, High School Musical, Hairspray, Joseph, Sister Act.  Most recently he went on the new UK tour of 9-5, High Society and has just finished the UK/Europe tour of Singin' In The Rain.  Kevin has also been backing some of the country’s top entertainers such as The Four Tops and Temptations. Following his return to Scotland, Kevin has been along to FYJO and the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra, as well as being the trumpet tutor on the Fife Jazz course for the last three years.
